After getting involved during my US exchange in the club AISC (AI Student Collective), I decided to bring the concept to my home university, Universidad Carlos III. I missed the opportunity to network with people working at great companies, learn useful tools, and connect with a community of AI-interested people at UC3M. That's why I convinced my great friends Alfonso and Lauren to open our own branch of the AI Student Collective, AISC Madrid.

During our first year as a club and my first year as president, I recruited and led a team of 17 students, built a community of 500+ people, and organized 28 events.

What we brought to university

We focused the club on two things: events and workshops.

Events

We brought to the university people we wanted to meet because of their relevance in the tech industry. Amazing people with different backgrounds and views, all in positions we aspire to reach in our professional future.

I'd like to highlight: Sergio Paniego (Hugging Face), Silvia Hernández (Spotify), Leyre de la Calzada (Microsoft), Javier Mencía (Multiverse Computing), and Carolina López (GitHub Copilot).

Workshops

We taught our community relevant tools that are sometimes not covered at university. We built small projects to learn Git/GitHub, neural network basics with PyTorch, the transformer architecture, the transformers library from Hugging Face, and the MCP protocol.

How I organized the team

I organized the team of 17 people into three subteams: events, web, and digital marketing.

During the early stages, I had to get involved in all the different teams. Once the project was established, I assigned a leader to each team so I could delegate tasks and allow the team to develop ownership and responsibility.

What I learnt

Building this community from day one has taught me several skills.

Technical

Server management. Our website is hosted on Hetzner and deployed using Coolify.

We also built from scratch internal tools for team management, event signups via QR code system, and weekly newsletter delivery to the community.

About the people

No matter how technical a project is, it's always about the people. Leading and organizing this great team helped me develop my leadership and communication skills. I've realized that you can accomplish great things as long as you have a clear goal and know how to communicate the motivation and vision for the project.

I feel really proud of what has been achieved with AISC, what I've learnt, and the people I've met along the way.
